The 2024 Oscar Nominees
The Nominees, The Snubs, and the Surprises in this year’s Oscars Race.
This year’s awards season has been full of excellent performances, legendary directors, and has conveyed a shift in the culture of Hollywood and entertainment as a whole. The nominees have varied from the culturally impactful Oppenheimer and Barbie, to more quiet films such as The Holdovers and Anatomy of a Fall. The Oscar nominees are no surprise to those that follow films or the awards season but for some left out some of the best performances of the year. See below for a full list of the nominees and who was left out that has social media and critics buzzing.
Surprises & Snubs
In a year that was mostly pink, it surprised audiences around the globe that neither Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie were nominated in big categories (Best Director & Lead Actress), whereas other members of the cast were nominated. This has led for some audiences on various platforms to allude to the Oscar voter not understanding the overall message of the Worldwide blockbuster and that once again women are not being recognized for their contribution to society and the world as a whole.
One of the younger actors to come into this award season with buzz was Charles Melton for his performance in the psychological film, May December. Many were almost betting on him receiving a Supporting Actor nomination from the Academy and yet his name was left off this list entirely. Many critics were surprised by this snub alluding to the lack of diversity to continue as a tradition for the awards season. Another diverse snub that shocked many critics was the exclusion of the film A Thousand and One which many believed to be a Best Picture frontrunner.
Last but certainly not least was the exclusion of the film Iron Claw and all of its actors from the entirety of the awards season. Social media entertainment contributors around the world have heralded the story and acting in the film. Audiences around the world have flocked to theaters for this heart wrenching film featuring internet’s bad boy, Jeremy Allen White and heart throb, Zac Efron praising the film across social media platforms. However, despite being a fan favorite it was left out of all awards and categories.
Some of the nominees however include several first time nominees and nominees that have made Oscar history. Colman Domingo is only the second openly gay man to be nominated for playing a gay character in the leading actor category, Lily Gladstone becomes the first Indigenous actor to be nominated in the leading actress category, and Robert Downey Jr picks up his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
